why community is essential for mental health

We talk about mental health more than ever.

We post about it. We podcast about it. We journal about it. We optimize it.

And yet…

So many of us feel more isolated than we did five years ago.
We live in a hyper-connected world, but most of us are craving real connection.

You can have 800 followers watching your life and still not have someone to call when you’re spiraling at 9:47pm.

Community isn’t just comforting.
It’s nervous system medicine.

but we've been sold a different story.

That strength looks like self-mastery.
That success looks like doing it alone.
That healing is a solo project.

We’ve been told it’s better to just love yourself and “keep your circles small” but all that does is create isolation.

We were made for community.

We pride ourselves on not needing anyone. On handling it on our own because society says that builds strength.

But let’s talk about why community is actually important.

Not in a vague, “it’s nice to have friends” way.
In a real, tangible, mental-health-impacting way.

How Community Regulates the Nervous System

When you’re around people who feel safe and trusting, it’s almost as if your body knows what’s up. You know what we mean.. Think about it this way, we all have stuck ourselves in a situation where we knew we shouldn't of ended up in the first place. A club. A conversation. A relationship. A room that didn’t align with who we’re trying to become, but we went anyway. And what happens?

Your energy is “off” or “sus”
You’re thinking how to perform your irish goodbye. That’s your nervous system telling the truth before your mind does. Now flip it. Think about being with someone who feels safe. Someone who is by your side.

You take your time to speak.
You breathe deeper.
You don’t have to have it all together.
Your shoulders and jaw softens.

It’s called regulation.

Isolation does the opposite of community.

The longer you sit alone with your thoughts, the louder they can become.

It’s easy to assume the worst about yourself when there’s no one there to reality-check the narrative.

Community interrupts that.

When you say something out loud — “I feel behind” or “I feel like I’m failing” — and someone responds with, “I’ve felt that too,” something shifts.

Shame softens.
The story becomes less absolute.

Why this matters to us

Our goal isn’t just attendance. It’s community. It is so #1 in our hearts that at the start of every year, we get together with our team to plan our events calendar in advance.

Multiple meetings, group chats going off, content planning… all because we understand that our muses need each other.

Our events might be the only place where they find rest and connection — and it shows. We design every event around building real community.

“For us, wellness isn’t just treatments and rituals.”

It’s conversation.

It’s sitting next to someone you’ve never met before (ahem, matcha with sana) and admitting you’re overwhelmed, or insecure, or tired — and realizing everyone else in the row of seats has felt the same way at some point.

We host events because we know that’s where it happens.

The side conversations before the panel starts.
The “wait, you too?” moments.
The deep convos over matcha.

The things we think we’re alone in usually aren’t rare at all — they’re just rarely said out loud.

That’s why we care so much about creating the space.

matcha with sana

Matcha With Sana was created with this in mind. To start our mornings alongside likeminded muses and intentionally nurture connection, meaningful conversation, and community.

If you’ve been craving new friendships who share the same love for skincare, wellness, and health the way you do, you’re probably not as far from them as you think. Sometimes it starts with simply showing up.

A monthly facial just happens to be a really good excuse to stay connected, stay consistent, and stay in community ;)

Because wellness isn’t just what you put on your skin. It’s who you sit next to while you’re figuring life out.

Ps. Stay tuned for this year’s event lineup. Subscribe to our Sana Newsletter and follow us on IG to know all about our upcoming events and celebrations. xoxo.
