But Why Hydrate?!

But Why Hydrate?!

You might think hitting hydration goals is just about chugging water, but what you eat plays a significant role too. We can get a balance of water, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, phosphorus), and carbohydrates through food and water. A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables + eight to twelve cups of water each day generally provides the levels most of us need. Of course, each person’s water requirement is different depending on how you’re moving your body, what you’re eating, your overall health, etc. Mixing electrolytes and carbohydrate sources directly into water is another way to help achieve that balance.

How can I tell if I’m properly hydrated?

It’s no secret that hydration is vital to our health as water keeps our bodies going—60 percent of our body weight is water and makes up our tissues, acts as lubricant for our joints, creates saliva and gastric juices, regulates our temperature, and much more. If you’re not getting enough water, there are some common signs such as dry mouth, thirst, sleepiness or tiredness, infrequent urination, muscle weakness, headache, and dizziness. When you’re thirsty, you’re already 1-2% dehydrated. We’re constantly losing water through sweating, talking, simply breathing… It needs to be replenished regularly, especially if you tend to sweat a lot or have a rigorous workout routine. We experience mild dehydration several times a week, when we realize we are thirsty. It’s proven dehydration has negative effects on cognitive performance during mild dehydration, in areas like problem-solving, vigilance, mood, headache, and increased task difficulty. It also affects muscular endurance, strength, and power.

Can I have long-term health issues by being frequently dehydrated?

Excessive low water consumption is related to an increased risk of developing diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Low daily water consumption is also a risk factor for urinary tract infection, kidney stones, and chronic kidney disease.

Benefits of drinking water first thing in the morning

on an empty stomach :

- It can help boost your brain. Many of us wake up a bit dehydrated and cranky. A glass of water replenishes the fluids we lost overnight, rehydrating the brain along with the rest of the body.

- It can help improve digestion.

A warm glass of water with lemon first thing in the morning can help stimulate the intestines, promoting better digestion.

- It can help you build healthy habits. Starting off the day strong with water can help you get into a hydration routine (especially if you tend to forget to drink it).

... sometimes the littlest things can make a huge difference.

One of the most important things you can do for your skin’s health and appearance is to stay hydrated. Your skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue. When the epidermis does not receive enough moisture, the skin loses its elasticity and feels rough. Skin that is lacking the hydration it needs becomes dry, itchy, flaky, red, or even inflamed. It can also exaggerate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles due to shrinkage of skin cells. When the epidermis has the moisture it needs to flush away toxins and carry nutrients to the skin’s cells, it rejuvenates your skin leaving it smooth and soft. Skin that is well-hydrated is less sensitive to irritants and germs that can slip through the lipid barrier when the skin lacks moisture.
